Assessment/Treatment Of Children/Adolescents With Behavior/Mood
Disorders And/Or Academic Difficulties
Populations include those
with ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Aspergers Syndrome, Separation
Anxiety, Learning Disabilities, Auditory Processing Disorder, Depression
and Anxiety
The
assessment of children proceeds according to a carefully constructed
protocol requiring parent and teacher interviews, rating scales, review
of entire educational history, and other necessary data. The feedback
session provides a thorough description of findings and recommendations.
Focused
individual psychotherapy for youngsters struggling with behavioral
and academic difficulties provides tailored guidance to alleviate
related life disruptions, e.g. academic underachievement, peer problems,
family conflict, etc. Parents and teachers provide critical input
to ensure that therapy relates directly to immediate problems. Treatment
of younger children often entails a parent’s presence during
sessions to extend and reinforce the impact of intervention. Goals
are supported by a range of psycho-educational tools, including customized
audio coaching tapes, parent journaling and Customized Coaching Cards.
Social
skills training entails practical and concrete methods to guide youngsters
toward improved self-control, perspective-taking, flexibility, and
the range of other friendship building skills critical to life happiness.
Video and audio tools, role play, and visual templates are sensitively
employed to expand the repertoire of interpersonal skills.
Parent
training addresses the behavioral problems commonly seen in children
struggling with behavior and academic challenges. Parents are guided
toward approaching misbehavior from a nonadversarial “coaching”
position in order to aid their children in developing improved self-management
skills. The broad range of parent coaching articles is employed to
provide further assistance.
Classroom
observation and consultation provides school-based services to inform
parents and assist teachers. Follow-up feedback about the child’s
response to lessons, peer interactions, and other behaviors is provided.
Strategies for improved academic and behavioral performance are offered
to teachers.
Telephone
Consultation/Supervision: For families and therapists who live too
far away for face-to-face meetings, telephone based consultation is
available. This provides individualized guidance in helping children
and guiding therapists using the Coaching Card model.
Assessment/Treatment
Of Adults With ADHD
The
assessment of adult ADHD consists of structured clinical interviewing,
adult ADHD scales, review of available educational history, contacts
with other informants, and other relevant data. A feedback session
provides a thorough description of findings and recommendations.
Focused
individual psychotherapy for adults struggling with ADHD provides
practical psycho-educational guidance to enhance occupational performance,
marital happiness, and overall life adjustment. Available audio recordings
of sessions allow adults to later reinforce skills and compensatory
learning.
Couples
therapy addresses the common difficulties that ADHD presents in relationships.
Problems with communication, trust, empathy, and conflict resolution,
among others, are focused upon.
Treatment Of Adults Struggling With A Range Of Challenges
Populations include those struggling with depression, anxiety,
eating disorders, relationship difficulties, and anger management.
Adults confront emotional struggles at various points in the life
cycle. These critical junctures include defining life goals and establishing
relationships in young adulthood, getting married or staying single,
motherhood, menopause and aging.
Our
approach to treating adults combines traditional talking therapy with
a variety of skills training materials in audio, video, and written
form. The development of a safe, collaborative relationship is blended
with the goal of helping adults feel empowered by new insights and coping
strategies.
